Handmade Custom Freestyle Footbags

I have been playing footbag since 2011, and I have been making handmade custom freestyle footbags since the summer of 2012. Over the years, I have made and sold over 600 freestyle footbags. I learned from some of the best stitchers on the East Coast and on Modified (the place to be for all things freestyle footbag at the time), but my first bags were definitely a bit experimental.

It took me about 15-20 bags to get to a point where my stitching was consistent and my templates were yielding bags with the right proportions and playing characteristics. I got bored of simple 32 panel bags by around my 50th bag and started branching out into higher panel counts and cool designs.

Higher Panel Count Footbags

Afterwards, I started looking more into the patterns available with 92 panel bags. You can think of the transition from 32 panels to 92 panels like going from HD video to 4k. There are so many new patterns that open up with the higher panel count. Thankfully people were willing to sponsor my creations. This enabled me to experiment and still recoup the time I spent making the bags, which could take up to 7 hours for a complex design.

The bag that took the longest was definitely my 122 panel, which took somewhere around 9 hours for me to make from start to finish. The pattern we relatively simple here, as it was the first bag I had made using this template. I don’t think I would make another one, but the temptation to experiment with the different patterns is definitely present.

I have also been working on a series of video tutorials that explains the details and steps needed to make handmade custom freestyle footbags. My goal with these videos is to provide a comprehensive guide for beginners and experienced stitchers alike. The first can be found below:
