Mandalorian Baby Yoda Figurines

December 2019. Disney releases the first season of the Mandalorian on Disney Plus and everyone falls in love with Baby Yoda. Yet, the holiday season is completely devoid of commercially available figurines and merchandise. I had a friend who was a huge fan of the show so I decided to print out a few models from Thingiverse and paint them up as nice Christmas gifts. They were printed on my Epax X1 printer that I had ordered a week before when my other resin printer decided it had lost its will to live. The prints served as a good test for the new printer and came out flawlessly.

I primed the prints and then set about painting them. This took a bit longer than I expected but it was a thoroughly enjoyable learning process. I was using an inexpensive no-name brand airbrush and an anemic air pump for the larger areas and shading. Then I went over the detailed areas with a series of acrylic washes and dry brushing. The models were finished off with some pastel weathering powders and sealed with a matte lacquer.

As you can see from the photos, the setup was rather temporary, but it still yielded good results. Most importantly, I learned a lot about the different painting and weathering techniques and see myself experimenting again with similar models in the future.
